Florida State College at Jacksonville (FSCJ) BlueWave Baseball Player Jordan Briones was selected as the 2019-20 Florida College System Activities Association (FCSAA)/Region VIII Male Scholar Athlete of the Year. The award is presented annually to one male student athlete who combines academic success with citizenship and athletic success.

 Jordan made the list of finalists after receiving the Bill Tuten Scholar Athlete Award. He was also recently named the Mid-Florida Conference Male Scholar Athlete of the Year.   

A second-year player for the BlueWave baseball program, Jordan is well respected by his peers, coaches, professors and administrators. He was 1-1 on the mound this year with 16.1 innings, a 2.76 era and 11 strikeouts. He hit .250 while playing in every game for FSCJ up until the COVID-19 pandemic caused the season to be canceled.

Academically, Jordan holds a perfect 4.0 GPA. He attended Stanton College Preparatory School in Jacksonville and completed his Associate in Arts (A.A.) at FSCJ this past December, after transferring in over 30 dual enrollment credits. Jordan earned Academic All-Conference, Academic All-Region and NJCAA All-Academic 1^st Team during both his freshman and sophomore years. His goal is to return to FSCJ for one more year and then to go on to medical school at the University of Florida. 

"Jordan is an outstanding model citizen both on and off the field. His hard work and dedication to being the very best on the field and in the classroom became evident his freshman year," said FSCJ Baseball Head Coach Brad Frick. "To see his success continue into his sophomore year was rewarding, although cut short. Jordan will be a successful human being and we are looking forward to him doing great things in the future."

Jordan has been instrumental in serving the community alongside his teammates, who lead all FSCJ teams in community service hours at well over 50 per year. Over the last two years, he has participated in a variety of service activities including: HabiJax house building, Catty Shack Ranch Wildlife Sanctuary clean-up, First Coast Heart Walk, Diabetes Walk/Run, pre-construction work at The American Patriot School, running a kids' clinic for Let's Move Jacksonville, and planting trees on campus for Arbor Day. In addition, he and his teammates regularly volunteer to work other sport tournaments, clean up campus after storms and to represent FSCJ in other community endeavors. 

"We are so proud of Jordan for all that he has accomplished and contributed to our community during his time at FSCJ," said College President John Avendano, Ph.D. "He's an exemplary leader for his team and fellow students, and we are so happy that his efforts have been recognized with each of these prestigious awards.
