Volleyball wraps up regular season play with a win at home on Sophomore Night

The BlueWave of Florida State College at Jacksonville wrapped up their regular season honoring seven of their sophomores before playing picking up a win against St. John's River this past Tuesday night.

After the pregame festivities to celebrate the careers of FSCJ sophomores, teams took to the court in what was expected to be a competitive match based on their previous meeting. The Vikings came ready to play in hopes of avenging the 3-1 loss in the first meeting. They jumped out to an early lead in the first set as the BlueWave struggled to find a rhythm. Both teams battled each other to a 24-24 tie, until the BlueWave managed to pulled out a close one 26-24.

The second set saw the Vikings of Saint John's River again take an early lead that would eventually build it to a seven point spread. The BlueWave battled back to within four points, but it wasn't enough as the Vikings took the second set 25-20. SJR continued their momentum to move up two sets as they took control of the BlueWave in a 25-23 set win. Not going down without a fight FSCJ was determined not to be out done on sophomore night and fought back to win the fourth set easily at 25-17. With determination the BlueWave jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the fifth and final set and cruised the rest of the way to a five set victory 15-10.

The BlueWave were led offensively by team captain Elizabeth Sandoval who had 18 kills on the night, followed by freshman Ketura Margaret who had her best game of the season with 16 kills. Marine Angely rounded out the three players with double digit kills with 10 kills of her own. This week's FCSAA defensive player of the week, Krystal Santiago, finished with a match high 21 digs and freshman setter Leah Mortensen set a new season and career high with 50 assists.

The team will travel to Melbourne, Florida this Thursday to face Indian River in a playoff match for a chance to qualify for the State Championship next weekend.
