BlueWave volleyball knocks off undefeated and #1 nationally ranked Polk State

The BlueWave volleyball team has once again done what no other team has been able to do this season, beat an undefeated #1 nationally ranked program.

Last year the BlueWave ended a three year winning streak for the Sharks of Miami Dade who at the time were ranked #1 in the nation in NJCAA. Seems history has repeated itself as the BlueWave knocked off Polk State College who was undefeated this season and held the #1 spot in the nation for NJCAA volleyball.

FSCJ pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the season when they beat the #1 nationally ranked team and previously unbeaten Polk State Eagles. The BlueWave, needing every win they could get in order to qualify for the State Tournament in less than two weeks, came out swinging from the first serve. The Polk State Eagles were a bit lack luster and did not seem to expect the kind of effort from the BlueWave, a team not even ranked in the top ten. FSCJ, however, could care less about their ranking and were determined to take the fight to the #1 team.

The BlueWave jumped out to an early lead and never looked back as they took the first set 25-20. The second set 25-17 was no different for the BlueWave as they once again took an early lead while the Eagles were struggling to find an offensive rhythm. Set three was more competitive as both teams would run off two or three points at a time. FSCJ went on a run midway through the set and built a six point lead, but the Eagles began clawing their way back to tie the match at 22-22 all. The BlueWave mounted one last effort and rode the arm of their team captain's 21 kills performance to put away the Eagles in straight sets to give them their first loss of the season.

FSCJ BlueWave got a 26 Digs effort from sophomore libero, Krystal Santiago. Elizabeth Sandoval led the team offensively with 21 kills, 2 errors on 41 attempts and freshman setter Leah Mortensen recorded her first double, double of the season with 33 assists and 13 digs.

The BlueWave will play their final home game this Tuesday October 22nd when they face St Johns River State College on Sophomore Night.
