FSCJ Women's Basketball supports teammate Alicea's family cause during Parkinson's Moving Day

Following an early morning Saturday practice, the FSCJ women's basketball team took part of the Parkinson's Moving Day event held at the University of North Florida.

Teammate Janyah Alicea asked if we would walk in honor of her great grandmother who passed to Parkinson's prior to being born. "I never got a chance to meet her." stated Alicea. "I try to live by the motto my Great Grandma Shirley used to say to my mom when she was younger; anything worth doing, is worth doing right the first time."

Alicea's family had put together a team to walk in honor of "Grandma Shirley" and were able to contribute over $600.00.The FSCJ women's basketball team met up with the group shortly after practice and walked alongside her family in support of the cause. The event truly brought attention and awareness to not only our team, but the community as well.

According to the Moving Day Jacksonville Parkinson's website, "Moving Day is an inspiring and empowering annual fundraising walk event that unites people around the country living with Parkinson's disease (PD), their care partners and loved ones to help beat PD.", according to the events website information.  "Moving Day is more than just a walk. It's a celebration of movement – proven to help manage Parkinson's symptoms. Leading up to the event, participants and teams fundraise to help the Parkinson's Foundation provide everything people with Parkinson's need to live better — from lifesaving resources to delivering quality care to more than 196,700 people living with Parkinson's to improving Parkinson's treatments through research. Moving Day proceeds help bring quality care to more people with Parkinson's, further Parkinson's research, education and outreach initiatives. Moving Day raises awareness of Parkinson's both nationally and in the local community."
