Softball opens up the season at JUCO Classic in Clearwater

The Florida State College at Jacksonville's BlueWave softball team opened their season in the NJCAA KO Classic in Clearwater, Florida this past weekend.

In the first game of Classic the FSCJ BlueWave would face Florence-Darlington Technical College (FDTC) out of Florence, South Carolina. The first inning of play would be silent for both teams, but in the bottom of the second FDTC would get the bats working to drive in four runs. The game would again remain quiet for additional three innings until the BlueWave would get on the scoreboard with one run. FDTC would answer back with another three runs closing out game one for FSCJ with a 7-1 loss to Florence -Darlington Tech.

Breanna Swanson scored the only run.  She also had a stolen base. Payton Mahon had 2 hits with 1 RBI.  Others getting hits were Sara Keves, and Tristan Edwards.

Game two on the day was much more promising for the BlueWave as they took on the SeaHawks of Broward Community College. FSCJ wasted no time getting on the scoreboard notching two runs in the bottom of the first. Broward would struggle to get the bat to the ball, while the BlueWave added another eight runs in the fourth to seal the deal. FSCJ would pick up their first win of the 2020 season in five innings versus Broward 10-0.

Hannah England pitched an outstanding game, only giving up 2 hits. Breanna Swanson had 3 hits including a double. Joely Leguizamon went 2-2 with a triple and 2 RBI's.  Others posting extra base hits were Sara Keves, Payton Mahon and Tori Richardson.

Day two of the Classic started with a cancelation of the Enterprise State Community College game, so the BlueWave had time to rest and prep for the final game of the event versus nationally ranked Indian River State College.

The BlueWave would be tested against the tough IRSC program as they recorded a run in the first inning to get things started. IRSC would again cross the plate in the top of the third before FSCJ would answer back with two runs fo their own in the bottom of the same inning. From this point on it was much like a tennis match as each team answered run for run staying tied 5-5 at the end of the ninth. It was the 10th and final inning that Indian River managed to tally an additional three runs to which FSCJ had no answer for, the BlueWave would drop the final game of the classic 8-5.

Cassidi Beaver and Macy Mizell each had two hits, with Mizell hitting a double. Sara Keves,Tristan Edwards, Payton Mahon, Hannah England and Emily Cononie all contributed at the plate.

The BlueWave are back on the road to Eastern Florida State College in Melbourne, FL on Feb 7th for games at 2:00 pm and 4:00 pm.
