St. Johns River defeats FSCJ in non-conference action

PALATKA, FLA. - FSCJ took the short trip south on Wednesday to take on St. Johns River in a rare non-conference game against a conference opponent. This midweek matchup did not count against the SunLakes Conference standings, nor will the other non-conference matchup between these two teams in two weeks.

St. Johns River 7, FSCJ 5

The homestanding Vikings took a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st inning on a grand slam home run, cashing in BlueWave free passes. FSCJ would answer for one run in the 2nd to cut it to 4-1, scoring on a Jack Gidcumb RBI single. SJR tacked on three more in the 2nd and went ahead 7-1. That would be all that St. Johns would get, as the BlueWave bullpen would hold the score there for a comeback chance. Mac Wilkins had an RBI hit-by-pitch to make it 7-2 in the 5th. Carson Womer contributed an RBI single followed by a Matt Retamoza two-RBI single to make it 7-5 in the 7th. Andrew Veniard (1-3) took the loss for FSCJ, throwing 1.2 innings, allowing 7 runs (6 earned) on 4 hits and 5 walks. Dylan Cope (1.1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 BB, 0 K), Noah Wood (4 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 2 BB, 5 K), and Alex Hurwitz ( 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 BB, 3 K) were outstanding out of the bullpen, combining for 6.1 innings of scoreless, hitless baseball.
