St. Johns River sweeps weekend from FSCJ

In the second SunLakes Conference weekend of the year, FSCJ and St. Johns River faced off in a split series matchup. SJR took all three games to sweep the weekend. FSCJ falls to 2-4 in SLC action. 

St. Johns River 8, FSCJ 5

JACKSONVILLE, FLA. - The opening game of the weekend was hosted by FSCJ on Friday evening. The Blue Wave jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the game on a Kobe Wiggins RBI groundout that scored Josh Green, who opened up the bottom of the second inning with a single. SJR responded with a run of their own in the third to tie it at 1-1. FSCJ broke out for a four-run fourth inning on the back of a JC Medina two-RBI single and Carson Womer two-RBI double. The score remained 5-1 until the Vikings plated 5 runs in the top of the sixth inning on two big home runs, gaining a 6-5 lead. Single runs in the seventh and ninth innings made it 8-5. Womer and Blake Wood had multi-hit games for the Wave. Brady Ellison was the starting pitcher for FSCJ, throwing 4.1 innings, only allowing one run on two hits, three walks, and two strikeouts. Dylan Cope allowed four runs in 1.1 innings, and Dylan Dudones (0-2) allowed the final three runs over the final 3.1 innings.

PALATKA, FLA. - Saturday's games were moved to Sunday due to rain in the area. In the first game of Sunday's doubleheader, FSCJ took another early lead at 2-0 on RBI groundouts by Sam Gordon and Noah Wood in the second inning, before another big inning doomed the Blue Wave. SJR put up 6 runs to take a 6-2 lead in the fourth inning on a conglomeration of hits, errors, and walks. Both teams tacked on a run in the fifth inning to finalize the score at 7-3 in the 7 inning game of the doubleheader. Kobe Wiggins had a multi-hit game. Colby Lipovsky (0-3) took the tough luck loss on the mound for FSCJ, going the full distance for the 6 inning complete game, allowing 7 runs (2 earned runs) on 5 hits, 2 walks, and 6 strikeouts.

PALATKA, FLA. - Game 3 of the series saw the Vikings of SJR take a 2-0 lead on single runs in the first and second innings. FSCJ answered in the fourth inning on a JC Medina RBI groundout. St. Johns would score in the last four innings to maintain their lead. Mac Wilkins drove in the Wave's second run, before Connor Nelson hit his first career home run to cap the game at 7-3. Jayden Long (2-2) was the starter for FSCJ, going 4 innings, allowing 3 runs on 5 hits, 3 walks, and 3 strikeouts. Tristin Bohler (3 IP, 6 H, 3 R, 1 BB, 4 K), Ethan Wilford (0.2 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 1 K), and Noah Wood (0.1 IP) threw in relief.

FSCJ will look to get back on track with a split midweek series against ABAC Tuesday and Wednesday.
