FSCJ Set to Debut Beach Volleyball

The Florida State College at Jacksonville volleyball team is excited for the opportunities that the addition of beach volleyball brings for its players and the future of FSCJ athletics.

Equipped with FSCJ's indoor volleyball roster, Head Coach Chelsea Hinck is going into the newly added sport with experienced players and an established beach background.

The coaching staff is preparing and excited for the newly formed season to get started. When the season begins, the coaching staff will work to evaluate players and make some solid pairings. Partnering two players that balance each other out will be the key.

"For our athletes, it provides a lot of cross-over training that will assist players to increase their volleyball IQ. It is also great for agility, conditioning and speed." Hinck said. "Playing volleyball in the sand just works these athletes differently and it will really help with injury prevention in the future. We already have a very athletic team and adding beach volleyball is only going to add a competitive advantage for us."

In beach volleyball, there are six pairs that compete against a team. The top five account for the scoring and it will take three pairs to win the match. The pairs play in waves, the first wave being the pairs one through three. The second wave are the pairs four through six. Every seven points, the teams switch sides of the court. The pairs play to two sets of 21, and if necessary, a third set to 15 with the goal of winning a best out of three series.

"With this team having an already established culture, they will bring the fun to the game. I am thrilled to watch our beach volleyball program unfold this spring." Hinck says.

The 2024 beach schedule will be finalized by the beginning of 2024 and the team can be seen practicing at various sand court locations in the Jacksonville area.
