BlueWave Fall Flat Against Daytona State

BlueWave Fall Flat Against Daytona State

Florida State College at Jacksonville women's basketball came out slow in the early goings of the game and never recovered as Daytona State picked up a 98-58 win on Wednesday afternoon at Daytona State Gym.

The BlueWave saw themselves struggling to buy a basket for the first three minutes of the game and Daytona took advantage of it to go a 7-0 run to start the first quarter. FSCJ was forced to call an early timeout to cool the Falcons.  Daytona State would connect on two more baskets to take a 11-0 lead before the Bluewave finally got on the board, A steal by Asia Harden and assist to Tykedra Rolland  would finally get FSCJ in the scoring column at the 5:45 mark of the first quarter.  Tykedra Rolland would connect again on a three-point play to put the BlueWave down nine with 4:39 left in the first quarter.  The BlueWave would be plagued by turnovers and defensive miscues to end the first quarter, giving Daytona State the advantage 27-12.

The BlueWave would open the second quarter off a three-point make from freshmen Rykeria Rolland with the assist of Asia Harden.  FSCJ would connect on another three-point basket this time from sophomore Asia Harden via assist sophomore Kayla Bell to outscore Daytona 6-2 to go on a much needed run. Then a pull-up jumper at the 8:20 mark from freshmen Rosa Vreugd would get the BlueWave within nine points of Daytona State. The BlueWave's 8-2 run would end when Daytona State put two in to expand the lead back to 11. Daytona would then stretch its lead to 50-27 at the half due to back to back turnovers from FSCJ.

The second half would find the BlueWave continuing to struggle to get back in the game. The Daytona State Falcons wouldn't let up with their stifling defense as the third quarter would end 28-13 in DSC's favor. The final quarter would find a bit of a fight left in the BlueWave as they managed to stay with Daytona scoring 18 points to their 20. Unfortunately the game would end with the FSCJ Bluewave falling 98-58 in Daytona.

Joseline Ramos led the BlueWave with 16 points, followed by Matae Boyd with 9.

"This was a tough loss," said head coach David Lowery "Daytona just came out in the first half with more energy and beat us in every facet of the game. We competed in the second half, but the hole we put ourselves in was big to overcome. We have to bounce back and get ready for the next one." FSCJ drops to 0-2 in the Mid-Florida Conference. They return to action at home hosting Santa Fe College Saturday Jan 18 at 2:00 p.m.
