Sophomores face Santa Fe in final home conference game

Sophomores face Santa Fe in final home conference game

The BlueWave women's basketball team honored three of their sophomores for "Sophomore Night". Monique Bryant, Zoie Grismore, and Shalese Ross were the center of attention during the halftime of the women's game. Teammates and coaching staff took time to recognize their efforts and celebrate their successes. As tradition, the three sophomores started the game and in return they came out making a statement.

FSCJ's roster put together a strong first half against Santa Fe College who is currently 5-1 in conference. The BlueWave were knocking down some key shots early on which fueled their confidence and led to defensive stops. With FSCJ only down by five at the end of the first quarter they rallied to take the lead at half 28-27.

With the loss of power forward Jazmine Williams to an on the court injury in the previous game against Daytona State, the BlueWave found themselves a bit more short-handed than usual. The third quarter continued to be a challenge FSCJ, but they managed to find a way to slow the pace down. Unfortunately, once again the BlueWave could not connect on much needed shots to put them in a position to compete as Santa Fe hit four shots of which three were three pointers that gave them a quick lead reversal.

Working to continue their focus on defense, FSCJ tried to delay the passing of Santa Fe guards to help stop the open and uncontested shots. Down by 18 points, the BlueWave increased their penetration looking for the Saints to collapse to open up back doors and open jump shots. However, FSCJ was unable to climb back from their deficit that ended in their sixth conference defeat.  Santa Fe College seized the game with a final score of 75-51.

Freshman, Kayla Mansell led the team with 13 points, sophomore Monique Bryant followed with 12 points, 8 rebounds, and 4 assists.

Next up the BlueWave will travel to Ocala, FL to take on College of Central Florida Wednesday, February 13, 2019. This will be their final meeting in conference action as FSCJ defeated CF in overtime by five at their place and then CF returned the favor when they beat FSCJ at home by 4 points.
