4 Achieve 4.0 As Men Boast Record GPA for Fall Semester

The Florida State College at Jacksonville men's basketball team have made an impact on the court, in the community, and now in the classroom this 2023-24 academic year. The team recorded a 3.18 grade point average for the Fall 2023 semester, which is the highest program total since the department began tracking grade point averages.

Four student-athletes each achieved the highest markings possible: a 4.0 grade point average. Sophomores Mark Brown, Roderick Gardner, and freshmen Alex McCray and Diego Dionisio all accomplished the impressive feat.

"We made it clear and concise from our first day together that academics will be our first priority," said Head Coach John Putyrski. "I know that our off-the-court behavior will help develop these guys into caring, detail-oriented young men. That can only maximize our on-court success."

It was an all-around great semester for this new era of the FSCJ men's basketball team as they finished the semester with a 9-2 record on the court and going undefeated in the month of November, began a mentorship program with the young students at Chappell School, partnered with the Salvation Army of Jacksonville during both the Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday seasons, and have now achieved great success in the classroom.

"Our team is truly remarkable, excelling not only in basketball but also in academics. Having a 4.0 GPA last semester sets a shining example for all of us." —Freshman Guard and Jacksonville Native Diego Dionisio

"Achieving a 4.0 GPA was one of my goals to begin the season. With the hard work and dedication that I put into my grades, it paid off in the end, and I'm looking forward to keep it going." Freshman Guard Alex McCray

"Having a good team GPA this semester shows how we worked together, and we were all dedicated to getting good grades. Personally, achieving a 4.0 showed own commitment to having academic excellence." —Sophomore Guard Mark Brown

"Coach P. made it clear what the standard was for academics. I am one of the oldest guys on the team, so it's only right that I do my part by holding that standard. It's for us in the long run, so I am proud that we committed to it." —Sophomore Forward and Jacksonville Native Rod Gardner

With classes beginning today for the spring semester, the team has goals of raising the new bar they've set for themselves and setting new records in the classroom. To stay up to date with all the happenings on your FSCJ BlueWave and more exclusive content, follow us on Instagram and X @FSCJMBB.
